PROTOCOL DESK / 2026

Reading rules as operating systems.

Protocol research examines the rules, software clients and governance processes that coordinate a digital currency network. Hovolo treats documentation as a starting point, then asks how those rules are implemented, observed and changed.

The work is educational. It does not rank projects, predict outcomes or recommend participation.

Four layers of protocol research

Specification

What the protocol says should happen, including message formats, state transitions and participation rules.

Implementation

How client software interprets the specification, handles upgrades and reports errors in actual operations.

Governance

How changes are proposed, discussed, approved, coordinated and communicated to users and operators.

Separating these layers prevents a marketing description from being mistaken for a complete account of system behaviour. A documented rule may still depend on a software version, network configuration or operational assumption.

From question to research note

  1. Define one mechanism rather than an entire ecosystem.
  2. Collect the current specification and relevant version history.
  3. Compare at least two implementation or operational sources.
  4. Mark facts, interpretation and unresolved questions separately.
  5. Publish the date, scope and limits of the explanation.
  • Check terminology before using shorthand.
  • Keep source links close to the claims they support.
  • Use cautious language where evidence is incomplete.
“A protocol is not only a document. It is a relationship between rules, software, operators and the people who rely on the resulting record.”

Research becomes clearer when each of those relationships is named. Hovolo's notes are prepared for learning and comparison, not for making financial or operational commitments.

Questions to carry into a source

Does the document describe a rule or an aspiration?

Look for precise conditions, version references and failure handling. Broad language can be useful for orientation but should not be treated as a technical specification.

What would change the conclusion?

Record the missing measurement, software release or governance decision that could materially alter the analysis. This makes later updates easier and avoids presenting a provisional interpretation as settled fact.
